Ian Nicholson - Cinematographer

Ian Nicholson - Cinematographer

Ian Nicholson's passion for photography began at age 13 when he did a photography course at summer camp during Britain's summer heatwave in 1976.

A few years later, he acquired his first 35mm SLR camera and hasn't looked back since.

He moved from stills to moving pictures when, in 2003, he completed a documentary video-making course at Sydney University, and in the following year, joined the Screen Actors Workshop to rekindle the acting skills he'd acquired in various stage productions at high school.

Inevitably, these two interests rapidly combined and Ian has since developed a passion for making narrative, dramatic films. In his relatively short career, he has made or been involved with over 20 short films and two feature films as 1st Assistant Director and Director of Photography.

In 2007, Ian was Director of Photography for 'Between the Flags' by Jayce White, that won Best Comedy and Best Male Actor at Tropfest 2007. That same year, he completed Dov S.S. Simens' legendary Hollywood Institute's Film Production course (as attended by Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie and many other film-makers). He has also since taken extra roles in films like 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' appearing alongside Hugh Jackman and Danny Huston, and in Peter Andrikidis's international thriller 'False Witness'.

In 2009, he assisted cinematographers Marcus Hides and Frank Hammond as 2nd camera in Scott Herford's production of 'Slag: Best Enemies'.

More recently, he was himself Director of Photography for Brad McBride's production of 'The Almanac'.

Ian also teaches Short Film Making at the Manly-Warringah Community College, and now runs the Short Film Masterclass for the Screen Actors Workshop.
